Area Information
RETHYMNO PREFECTURE
The Prefecture of Rethymno is one of the four prefectures of the largest Greek island, Crete. It is located between the prefectures of Heraklion and Chania. It is formed within the boundaries of two coastlines since it borders the Cretan Sea and the Libyan Sea north and south respectively. The capital of the prefecture is the city of the same name Rethymno. It is a mainly mountainous part of Crete. The well-known mountain and main feature of the island, Psiloritis, extends to its Eastern borders. The river Geropotamos, which crosses the prefecture and ends in the Cretan Sea, starts from Psiloritis, An important part is occupied by the lowlands, which play a catalytic role in the economy, which relies mainly on agriculture and tourism and to a small extent on livestock. The largest crops are olive groves, but there are other plants, legumes and vegetables. Many travelers arrive every year, thanks to the beauty of the landscape, the beautiful beaches and the picturesque villages. There are, therefore, many tourist accommodation establishments and hotel units. In Rethymno there are several permanent residents and many students who keep the place alive even in winter. The existence of students is due to the housing of the University of Crete in the city of Rethymno in which there are many departments. There is a good road network that connects the areas and the villages with each other but also the prefecture with the neighboring prefectures. The Prefecture of Rethymno has a port but does not have its own airport. The visitors and the residents are served by the other airports of the island. The whole of Crete is famous for its traditional delicacies and for the hospitality of the locals.
